Tree Removal Regulations in Omaha
Removing a tree is usually a pretty simple and straightforward process. You can either use your own tools and remove the unwanted tree, or you can call in an Omaha tree removal company to do the job for you. If you choose either of these two options, you can proceed without having to deal with any obstacles or hassles from officials on the state or local level.
In some states, there are rules and regulations regarding tree removal. This can include getting special permissions or securing special permits before the trees can be felled. In other states, there aren’t any rules and regulations. In fact, the local government, including the city, will handle the tree removal process for you in some states. With that said, let’s take a look at how tree removal in Omaha, Nebraska is handled.
Homeowners are Responsible
After a stretch of severe weather hit the city of Omaha last year (2021), many large tree branches fell completely to the ground. Other trees had branches that were snapped and left hanging off the trees. News reporters spoke with Omaha residents who were trying to clean up the debris. One who lived in a Benson neighborhood described putting up signs around a limb that was left hanging from a tree, warning passersby to keep away.
Many homeowners were unsure how to proceed with these tree issues. Other residents had the same problem, but on their own residential properties, not in public spaces. The concerned citizens sparked an investigation to determine how to handle the damaged trees.
The city of Omaha will clear out any debris and will remove damaged trees from public parks and other public spaces. However, they will not remove trees that are located on private residential properties, according to David Austin, the chief field inspector of Parks and Recreation for the city of Omaha.
Diseased Tree Removal
The City of Omaha does remove trees that have been damaged by disease, however. Back in the winter of 2020 into 2021, the city announced that they would be removing more than 1,000 trees that were infested by Emerald Ash Borer, an insect that is known to kill Ash trees. Why did the city remove those trees and not others? The trees that were removed by the city of Omaha posed a serious risk to public safety. Therefore, the city of Omaha was responsible for removing the afflicted trees in order to avoid other trees in the area from becoming infested.
